ELWR for ESL Students

Students in computer lab.

Follow the steps below to satisfy the ELWR:

STEP 1: Take the Exam

Find out if you are required to take the ELPE.

  • If you are required to take the ELPE, you will be contacted with information about the ELPE and instructions on how to register.
  • If you are not contacted about the ELPE but think that you need to take the exam, please contact us at iae@ucdavis.edu.
  • If you miss your scheduled ELPE, please contact us at iae@ucdavis.edu.
  • If you are required to take the ELPE, you must have an ELPE score to be able to take any writing course.

Learn more about the ELPE here

STEP 2: Enroll in the Correct ESL Writing Course

Your ELPE score will determine which ESL writing course you take first. What was your score?

  • 90-100 = Enroll in WLD 57s
  • 80-89 = Enroll in UWP 23
  • 70-79 = Enroll in UWP 22
  • 69 or below = Enroll in UWP 21

STEP 3: Complete the Course Sequence

Once you are enrolled in an ESL writing course, you must take the remaining courses in order until completion. For example, if your ELPE score places you in UWP 23, you will need to take UWP 23 and then WLD 57s (in that order).
