Roger Chammas, MD-PhD, is currently a professor of Oncology at Universidade de São Paulo and director of the Center for Translational Research in Oncology at Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo. Chammas got his MD at Universidade de São Paulo (1988) and his PhD degree at the same university, working at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. As a post-doctoral fellow, Chammas was trained in glycobiology in Ajit Varki's lab at UC San Diego (1994-1997). Chammas has been affiliated with Universidade de São Paulo since 2001. His lab focuses in the interactions of cells within the distinct tissue microenvironments, with an emphasis on the role of galectin-3. Contributions on galectin-3 biology were the results of a collaborative effort that involved the participation of Fu-Tong Liu, MD-PhD, then at the Department of Dermatology at UC Davis. More recently, his focus has expanded to emerging mechanisms for tumor cell resistance to different forms of treatment, including aspects of tumor physiology, such as vasculature tone and function. As a Fulbright scholar, Chammas will work with Julie Sutcliffe, PhD, aiming to develop imaging probes for tumor-associated macrophages.
