The SPEAK Test is one method that multilingual graduate students can use to demonstrate that they have the requisite oral skills to hold TA or AI positions, but this exam is no longer offered at UC Davis.
Up until 2015, the SPEAK Test was the primary on-campus tool used for determining TA eligibility, but in 2015, it started being phased out and replaced by the Test of Oral English Proficiency (TOEP). The SPEAK was last offered on campus in 2017, and the TOEP is now the only oral proficiency exam offered on campus for determining TA eligibility. While the SPEAK will not be administered on campus in the future, all past SPEAK scores are still valid and can still be used to satisfy the TA/AI Language Proficiency Requirement.
From 2015 to 2017, while both the SPEAK and TOEP were offered on campus, the SPEAK was primarily used to determine a student's eligibility to take the TOEP. Now that the SPEAK has been phased out on campus, all active graduate students are eligible to take the TOEP regardless of their TOEFL/IELTS scores.
